Calling all twinkle enthusiasts! Emo five-piece Free Throw are hear to satisfy your needs for new sad music. The band's style blends traditional emo with an edgy pop punk twist, fitting in nicely along the lines of Brave Bird and Dowsing. Though the band's sound is reminiscent of the midwestern emo revival that' is gaining traction, this Nashville group creates catchy and poignant tunes that are executed with perfection.
The band's most recent release, Lavender Town, shows the band blending noodling guitars with raspy vocals. Sometimes bouncy and head bob-worthy and sometimes somber and mellow, Free Throw do it all in about fifteen minutes. Also, each song features a sound clip from the television show Undeclared, an interesting and cute watermark that makes the songs that much more unique. Title track "Lavender Town" has some memorable hooks, like "Tonight I'll see you in my /dreams I'll know that it's fake/ my life is now my nightmare/please don't let me fucking wake." Though the lyrics aren't very clever or thought-provoking, they don't need to be. The instrumentation carries the lyrics rather than the other way around, something that other emerging emo artists have had a hard time doing. Closer "Pennsylvania Dutch" hits the sweet spot with a slow intro, an aggressive mid-tempo shift, and relatable lyrics of lost love.
Free Throw's self-titled EP is nothing to scoff at, either. If you enjoy Lavender Town, the band's first release has some similar songs worth checking out. "Lvl. 2 Pidgey In A Masterball" has the same energy as "Pennsylvania Dutch" and "An Hour Pissed"is another groovy track that sounds like it came right of Brave Bird's new album, and that's a good thing.
Free Throw is about a group five friends having fun writing some catchy emo songs, and they do that extremely well. The band prides themselves on basement shows, so don't be surprised if you see them in your town. Be sure to keep your eye on them, as twinkle fans will definitely be hearing great things from Free Throw in the future. In the mean time, you can stream and download all of their material for free on Bandcamp.
