Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; however, I have to say this review is quite harsh and perhaps a little pompous. If you knew anything about this band, I would say they are indeed quite serious and sophisticated about their music. The technical detail that went into this album is beyond evident and to say it is repetitive and nothing special is quite baffling to me. Lyrically as well as musically, I believe Punchline has developed significantly; I've been following them since 2001, so I have witnessed firsthand that they are mature, intelligent musicians and are beyond capable of producing established lyrics. They've been around longer than most artists and have flourished as a musical unit, so to say they have created an immature album is incorrect. Perhaps you should take another listen & maybe you'll find yourself delightfully mistaken with your previous judgment of a competent band.
Well, I really really like this album. I'm not saying they aren't taking themselves seriously, or that the band is immature, but the fact that they make music that is supposed to be FUN. It's not music that's meant to be loved as life changing lyrically, it's meant to be stuff you enjoy. Believe me, I'd rate this album a good 4/5. Now, this is just my interpretation of the album.
I have to laugh, not at the review but at the first comment. I too have been a fan on Punchline for years, but this is a CD review. There is no room for "OMG- I love this band" or gushing. As a journalist, you have to be objective and write the truth. Besides, you didn't say anything rude or wrong- you wrote your review (which is your opinion) of the album. If I were in a band, I would take this as a good review.
I wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes. I think the negative wording of your review threw me off a bit. It seemed like you were saying that they intended to create a mediocre album. Maybe I was reading into that a little bit. I should have written about the positive aspect of your review as well. I apologize if I offended you.

ReplyDeleteFour sentences out of that whole review were non-praise. Seems like a good review to me. Why only focus on the bad?
ReplyDeleteExactly. I need to do a non-biased review to focus on both the good and bad. And I obviously talked about the good more than the bad.

ReplyDeleteOh, no, I wasn't offended.
ReplyDeleteEvery comment helps. It wasn't intentionally negative.
